Striking, streamlined design

Both new Focus bodystyles share a sporty and dynamic character, marking the next evolution of Ford’s acclaimed kinetic design form language, which has contributed to the growing popularity of the company’s latest small and medium global cars.

With its striking front end, sleek profile, dramatic rising beltline and athletic stance, the new Focus clearly signals the rewarding driving experience that awaits customers when they take to the road.

The all-new Focus sedan has a drag coefficient as low as 0.295, compared to 0.320 for the current model. The streamlined Focus shape and steeply raked windscreen contribute to significantly reduced drag, while optimised aerodynamics help reduce wind noise at speed and contribute to improved fuel efficiency.

Noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels have been reduced and driving dynamics improved by the increased stiffness of the body structure, with 30 per cent greater rigidity than the previous Focus model.

The dynamic quality of the exterior is reinforced by the distinctive design of the interior. The new Focus has a modern, cockpit-style interior, with the stylish centre console wrapped around the driver and providing outstanding access to the vehicle’s major controls.

Ford’s latest-generation Human Machine Interface (HMI) system is used within the cockpit, with twin five-way toggle switches on the steering wheel controlling the two main vehicle displays located in the instrument cluster and high in the centre of the instrument panel.

Active Park Assist is a semi-automatic parallel parking system that uses sensors around the vehicle and the new Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system to guide the vehicle into place. It measures the length and depth of the chosen parking space and then steers itself into position, while the driver controls the accelerator, brake and gear selection.

Passive safety features include a new generation of advanced airbag restraint systems with driver and front passenger airbags, side front airbags and side curtain airbags for front- and rear-seat occupants, as well as an exceptionally strong and light steel bodyshell.

The new bodyshell makes use of more high-strength steels than any previous Ford.

High strength steels comprise 55 per cent of the body shell and more than 26 per cent of the vehicle structure is formed from ultra high-strength and Boron steels. These advanced materials help the structure meet the most stringent crash legislation across world markets while minimising overall vehicle weight.

Unmatched driving quality

When it was introduced globally in 1998, the original Ford Focus brought new levels of agility and responsiveness to the small car segment. The next-generation Focus plans to raise the benchmark once more, targeting class-leading driving quality that blends outstanding steering precision and road feedback with significantly improved refinement and ride control.

Ford engineers have enhanced Focus’ cornering stability and agility with the introduction of an advanced Torque Vectoring Control system, which is fitted as standard equipment.

The system behaves like a limited-slip differential to constantly balance the distribution of torque between the front wheels, which results in reduced understeer, improved traction and better turn-in. This technology has, up to now, typically only been available on premium sports vehicles.

Ford engineers have also retuned and enhanced the innovative suspension concepts from prior models, developing optimised new designs for the Control Blade Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) and the semi-isolated front subframe.

The new chassis design also now incorporates a completely new Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system on mid- and high-series models, which has been tuned to deliver precise response at speed while remaining light and manoeuvrable for easy parking.

Spirited performance with outstanding economy

The engaging driver appeal of the new Ford Focus is magnified by a three-prong powertrain range that delivers spirited performance and offers outstanding fuel economy and CO2 emissions. The powertrain line-up includes an all-new 2.0-litre GDi (gasoline direct injection) petrol engine that combines high-pressure direct injection and twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) for enhanced performance and fuel efficiency

A completely updated 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi common rail turbo diesel engine is also part of the line-up. Both engines offer significant increases in power and torque compared to the outgoing model.

Both engines are matched to the latest six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission.

The third powertrain comes in the form of a 1.6-litre Duratec Ti-VCT engine (only available on Ambiente), which will be the fuel economy leader for the new Focus range, providing a reduction in fuel consumption of more than 15 per cent compared to the outgoing model.

After the crash tests, EuroNCAP said of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta that it remained stable in the front impact, scored maximum points for the side barrier impact and the reactive head restraints offered good protection against whiplash. Both child dummies were properly contained by their restraints in the side barrier test. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta not only looks after its occupants – it scored maximum points for the protection of pedestrians from the bumper and in most areas likely to be struck by the head of a child, the bonnet offered good protection. The new Giulietta also rated a score of 86% percent for technology designed to help the driver avoid an accident in the first place.

The rating is even more significant considering that from 2009 EuroNCAP adopted a new judgment criteria composed of four areas of accident assessment, namely Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian Protection and a new area: Safety Assist. Injury avoidance and mitigation functions, such as seat belt reminder, ESP and speed limiter, are also rated. Achieving a five-star rating will become increasingly tough year by year (2009, 2010-2011, 2012). In this scenario, the rating achieved by the Alfa Giulietta (97% Adult Occupant, 85% Child Occupant, 63% Pedestrian Protection and 86% Safety Assist) means that the car will also have a five-star rating in 2012 when the assessment system will have reached maximum severity.

This major accolade yet again confirms Alfa Romeo’s special commitment to all aspects relating to the protection of all road users. The Alfa Giulietta was designed and built to obtain maximum passive and active safety performance.

Thousands of hours of virtual simulations have gone into the creation of the new Compact platform, which made its debut in the Giulietta. The quality of virtual design has been materially confirmed by running 200 tests on components and subsystems, some 150 Hyge slide shock test simulations and more than 80 crash tests (frontal impact, side impact, roll-over and shunting, taking various speeds, different types of obstacles and the need to protect occupants, physically very different from one another, into account). These numbers confirm Alfa Romeo’s profound commitment to making the new Giulietta one of the safest cars in Europe by ensuring that it contains the most advanced safety systems.

Six airbags are standard (two of which are Multistage), plus three-point seatbelts with double pretensioners and load limit limiters, and SAHR (Self Aligning Head Restraints), a new second-generation device built into the backrests of the front seats that moves the head restraints closer to the occupants’ heads in the event of an impact, to lessen the effects of whiplash. There is also a highly significant contribution to occupant and pedestrian protection provided by the body, the bonnet, the doors and the dashboard crossmember, in addition to the seats and steering column.

The effectiveness of all these systems is maximized by a three load line front structure that guarantees structural uniformity and consequently uniformity of response in the event of frontal impact, regardless of the type of obstacles or vehicle that the car is in collision with. This is a breakthrough in partner protection, because the vehicle is less ‘aggressive’ when crashing into the front or side of another vehicle, and in self protection, because uniform deformation makes the retaining systems more effective, regardless of the type of accident.

Finally, in the field of preventive safety, the new Giulietta uses headlights with Daytime Running Lights that are automatically switched on when the engine is started – to meet a specific European standard that will come into force in 2012 – and LED tail lights, brighter than conventional bulbs, for extra safety.

The Giulietta has a full complement of airbags plus an array of electronic devices designed to let drivers extract the maximum from their Alfa Romeo while staying safe at all times. There’s ABS anti-lock braking with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD); Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) – Alfa Romeo’s interpretation of Electronic Stability Programme; Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Steering Torque (DST), Hydraulic Brake Assistance (HBA) and the new Pre-Fill function for the brakes.

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is available in New Zealand in two versions, equipped with a choice of an advanced MultiAir engine with 125 kW or in the top Giulietta QV variant with 173 kW, both of which deliver an outstanding combination of performance, fuel economy and low emissions.

Challenger has accounted for over 240 sales since its launch in January and head of sales and marketing strategy Daniel Cook says the improvements are a direct response to consumer feedback.

“Challenger has had a strong following since it was first sold in New Zealand in 1999,” said Mr Cook. “Upgrades have further refined the 2.5 L common rail turbo diesel engine and structural work on the ladder-frame chassis has increased the tow capability to 3.0 tonnes.”

“We now have three diesel models – Triton, Challenger and Pajero – comprising 11 variants capable of towing 3.0 tonnes or in the case of the range topping Pajero 3.3 tonnes,” says Mr Cook. “The refinements of modern diesel engines and Mitsubishi’s long history in off-road vehicle development provide drivers with comfort, performance and the torque to hook almost any commercial or recreational toy to the tow ball.

Further upgrades to the 2011 Challenger Exceed include paddle shifters and sports mode transmission, rain sensing windscreen wipers, power passenger seat and dusk-sensing and auto levelling headlights. The range also gains the Iron Bark colour, popular in Pajero.

The new Mitsubishi ASX Diesel Sport is the most fuel-efficient Small Lifestyle Vehicle in New Zealand, winning the class in the AA Energywise Rally.

“The excellent result proves that diesel technology is really coming into its own,” said driver and Mitsubishi Motors technical services manager Lloyd Robinson. “The ASX engine features world-first variable valve timing in a diesel passenger car; the result of a collaborative focus to extract maximum potential from the fuel.

“There is a huge amount of development going into diesel engines,” said Mr Robinson. “Mitsubishi Motors and sister company Mitsubishi Heavy Industry have been developing this engine for some time and they’ve done an exceptional job. It is very fuel efficient with low carbon emissions and, at the same time, strong and powerful – consumers no longer have to compromise between efficiency and power.”

The rally took competitors from Auckland to Wellington and back over four days, covering 1,780 km over a variety of roads. The ASX Diesel Sport used slightly over a tank and a half (95 litres) of fuel at a cost, including Road User Charges, of $195.30 or 0.11 cents / km.

In winning the class, Mr Robinson bettered ASX’s 5.9L/100km factory fuel use figure by 8.65% and the stated 155g of CO2 /100km by 9.42%. At the finish line he’d averaged 5.4L/100km and 140g/100km over the event.

The ASX was revealed to the New Zealand market in August and has enjoyed buoyant sales, capturing the imaginations of consumers in a range of segments. Mitsubishi’s head of sales and marketing strategy Daniel Cook says ASX has appealed to lifestyle-focused customers.
